About Wakehurst Place

Wakehurst Place Sussex is a gem of a day out. It is a National Trust site managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The beautiful Elizabethan estate house was built in the late 16th century and the two square kilometres of gardens were designed throughout the 20th century. It is one of the National Trust's most frequently visited sites with more than 400,000 visitors each year. The gardens are a true feast for the senses with walled gardens, water gardens, conservation areas featuring both woodlands and wetlands, and an astonishing array of flora and fauna.

Things to see and do

When Kew Gardens took up a lease from the National Trust, they fashioned the gardens in such a way as to simulate a walk through temperate woodland regions from throughout the world. While the mansion is stately and wonderful, the gardens are the main attraction. Spend an entire day soaking up the beauty of the English countryside surrounded by nature. It is a great day out for the whole family. The Adventurous Journeys trail is a series of natural play areas that children love. With play features such as tunnels, a maze, a labyrinth, and more, all made out of natural materials, it is an ever evolving area with plans for more play areas to be created in the future.

Observe the wildlife and plants around Westwood Lake and around the Wetland Conservation Area. Check their website for the latest scheduled activities for families and the various workshops and course that are available on topics such as how to determine safe or poisonous mushrooms in the wild.

Wakehurst Place is also home to the world's biggest seed conservation project, The Millennium Seed Bank, whose mission is to protect plant life from extinction.

Opening Times

The estate is open every day except for the 24th and 25th of December. Wakehurst Place opening times are from 10am to 6pm, March to October and 10am to 4:30pm, November to February. The house and the Seed Bank close one hour earlier. The house is frequently closed on Saturdays for weddings and other private events, so check ahead if you want to tour the house.
